When I first heard about Sunday Riley A+ High Dose Retinoid Serum, I knew that I needed it. I adore Sunday Riley and retinoids work well with my skin, so it was a match made in Heaven. The team over in Texas very kindly sent me a fun PR package so I could put it to the test.
I have been testing a lot of skincare recently and it’s resulted in my skin being a bit of dick. There’s texture, redness and irritation thanks to the relentless change in products. This happens every few months, and that’s always the sign that I need to go back to my tried and trusted skincare routine for a while. I’ve a couple of bits to finish testing and then I need to take a break. For me, Sunday Riley products never let me down and I’m looking forward to getting back to my usual regime – A+ will be making the cut.
The PR package itself was fun and playing on the A+ theme. It came with a large mortarboard style box, complete with a diploma and a lovely little necklace. I know that in terms of the environment that this is over the top and not necessary, but I did love it. To be sent products from one of my favourite brands still seems unreal to me and there was excitement to see such a lovely package.
So, what is a retinoid? I’m going to explain it really simply as it’s too easy to get bogged down with a load of ‘science’ and no-one wants their head mashing. Retinoids are derived from Vitamin A and they work to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation.
I’m trying very hard to hold off from having Botox, but the lines on my forehead and around my mouth are becoming an issue. Whilst I can reduce the appearance of them, I knew that I needed something stronger. My prayers have been answered. Now don’t get me wrong, Sunday Riley A+ isn’t some miracle cure and the lines are definitely still there, but this is so effective at helping to hide them.
A+ is a high dose retinoid serum and it delivers a 6.5% solution of both stabilised retinoid blends and retinol-alternative botanical extracts into the skin.
The serum combines 5% retinoid ester blend, 1% liposomal-encapsulated retinol blend, and 0.5% blue-green algae. All of these work together to fight the signs of ageing as well as improving the look of skin that has UV damage or is congested.
The formula also contains encapsulated Q10 which is also great for damaged or ageing skin. There’s also Hawaiian white honey, bisabolol, cactus extract and ginger to balance and soothe the skin. This results in your complexion looking calmer and with a more even tone.
I’ve worked A+ into my regular Sunday Riley routine easily, although it still works well alongside other products if you’re not a Sunday Riley junkie like myself. At night, I double cleanse my skin with Ceramic Slip and then Blue Moon before applying A+. I then apply Luna, and if my skin needs a bit more, I’ll apply whatever night cream I’m using. Sometimes I mix it up and replace Luna with CEO Glow or Juno. I use A+ on alternate nights and twice a week I’ll use Good Genes instead.
If you’ve never used retinoids before, you need to ease them into your skincare routine. Start by using them for two nights and then take two nights off. You can then gradually increase it to every other night and then every night. For me, every other night is enough, but as I get older I can see me increasing it to every night.
After just a few weeks, I am noticing a difference in my skin tone and in those bloody lines and it is helping to reverse the irritation caused by my weeks of skincare testing.
